The Mission of TeamUp Colorado! is to support a TEAM approach to education. The teachers lead the students and parents (or guardians) to work collaboratively to optimize the learning journey for every child. Community individuals and groups surround this team to guide, support, and enhance their work.
We believe that all parents want the best of their children, but they often lack the understanding, skills, and materials to help with academic learning. Furthermore, the invitation to partner with school staff and the infrastructure to effectively stay involved with teachers is lacking.
In August, 2023, TeamUpColorado joined McMeen Elementary to build and support robust parent and community involvement in Math and Reading. Within weeks, it became apparent that a significant and unanticipated crisis was brewing in the building. On a weekly basis, families were registering students who had recently arrived from South America.
The impact has created a considerable burden for the teachers:
TeamUpColorado jumped in to work with other agencies and organizations to build sustainable systems and support for these children, their families, and the school staff that support them.
Some backstory about these McMeen families:
40,000+ immigrants mostly from Venezuela arrived in Denver in 2023-24. Almost daily a bus from Texas has arrived to drop families including children off on the street – sometimes in the middle of the night. This is part of the largest prolonged displacement of human beings in the Americas.
These people are fleeing in despair due to the deterioration of the economy and social fabric of their country caused by corrupt and dysfunctional leaders. They have experienced rampant inflation, kidnappings, murders, and gang violence. They are seeking food, shelter, healthcare, education, and employment. Only 16% of those fleeing are arriving in the United States. Many are remaining in other Latin American and Caribbean countries.
We need our federal leaders to step up and do their jobs to help stabilize the region and to establish immigration policies that create a path forward. The number one thing these families are asking for is a job. There are many ways to get involved with TeamUp Colorado. Donate your time, talents, or make a donation today. We would love to have you on our TEAM!
